Committee on the Future Hears From San Francisco Members

On August 16, 2023, the Committee on the Future (COTF) held two listening sessions in the San Francisco, CA region. IAM Western Territory Chief of Staff Robert “Bobby” Martinez appeared on behalf of General Vice President Gary R. Allen to welcome attendees and stress the importance of members expressing their ideas for the future of the IAM. The sessions were hosted in Burlingame, CA at a lodge that is the home of IAM District 141, Local 1781, and Local 1782.

Connecticut Local 1746 Members Generously Donate Supplies to Local School District

IAM Local 1746 recently participated in the  East Hartford (Conn.) Public School system’s Back-to-School Rally. IAM Local 1746 members have generously donated an assortment of essential school supplies bearing the IAM logo to aid students in their educational journey.

IAM Local 1746’s participation was part of the Maria Santiago Lillis Advocacy Day – A Commitment to Serve (ACTS) to honor Santiago Lillis’ tireless fight for workers’ rights, human rights and social justice.

The Back-to-School Rally, organized by East Hartford Public Schools Office of Equity, Partnerships and Achievement, helped bring together students, families, educators, and community members to kick off the new school year with enthusiasm and determination. The event featured various engaging activities and resources to help students start the year on a positive note.

Recognizing the importance of equipping students with the tools they need to succeed, IAM Local 1746 donated school supplies to help ease the financial burden on families while creating a positive learning environment for students.

“We firmly believe that every student deserves the opportunity to thrive academically, regardless of their socioeconomic background,” said IAM Local 1746 member Thérèse Hervieux. “By contributing to the East Hartford Public Schools Back-to-School Rally, we are investing in the future of our community and empowering students to reach their full potential.”

IAM Local 1746 is proud of its commitment to local community organizations. In May, the IAM Local 1746’s Women’s Committee organized a collection of money and supplies at Pratt & Whitney’s East Hartford campus for the Prudence Crandall Center Women & Children’s Shelter. 

Every level of the IAM supported this effort, including the Eastern Territory, William W. Winpisinger Center, Communications Department, District 26, and Local Lodge 1746 officers and membership. 

“I am so proud of the work our members at Local Lodge 1746 do in the community,” said IAM Eastern Territory General Vice President David Sullivan. “Their participation in this rally showcases the impact our members make daily. Local Lodge 1746 members work so hard every day and still find time to contribute to the East Hartford Public School system. I am glad the Eastern Territory staff could assist with this project.” 

IAM Local 1746 members are skilled workers at Pratt & Whitney, a Raytheon Technologies Company in East Hartford, Conn. The members manufacture, repair, and produce parts for commercial and military engines, including the KC-46 air refueling tanker, the F-35 joint strike fighter, and the A320 commercial airliner.

IAM Automotive Department Joins Industry Discussions at White House

Last week, IAM Automotive Coordinator Craig Hughes attended a White House meeting to discuss advancing the partnerships between organized labor and community colleges.

The National Economic Council hosted the meeting with representatives from the Department of Labor, the Department of Education, leadership from various community colleges, other labor leaders, and the AFL-CIO.

Discussions took place to help better align skills, training and career pathways to industry needs and quality union jobs.

“There are many examples of schools that would make sense to partner with,” said Hughes. “Building partnerships with these schools will open new career pathways to good-paying IAM jobs for people just entering the workforce while growing the IAM Automotive sector. 

IAM Automotive represents over 35,000 members from multiple industries, including generators and power systems, buses, trucking, vehicle delivery services, auto, truck, vehicle repair, and dealerships.

Premiering Soon: Hallmark Movie Influenced By Guide Dogs of America

The IAM’s favorite charity, Guide Dogs of America | Tender Loving Canines (GDA | TLC), welcomed actress Sarah Drew to an open house at their campus in June as she prepared for the starring role in Hallmark’s soon-to-be released movie Guiding Emily.

Drew, known best for her role in the show Grey’s Anatomy, toured GDA | TLC’s Sylmar, Calif., campus as part of her research for the new project where she plays a newly-blind person receiving her first guide dog.

Commenting before the SAG-AFTRA strike Drew told TVLine, “Shooting Guiding Emily was a deeply moving experience that allowed me to enter into the blind and partially sighted community in a very powerful way.”

“I was also honored to visit the Guide Dogs of America open house the weekend before we started shooting,” said Drew. “I was able to tour the facility and learn all about the process for raising service dogs and the sacrifice puppy raisers make to train them for two years and then send them off to a member of the blind and partially-sighted community.”

Guiding Emily Producer Beth Grossbard first contacted GDA | TLC’s Director of Development & Marketing Zack Gittlen in an effort to find ways to promote the movie within the blindness community. Grossbard quickly realized that Drew needed to be introduced to people in the blindness and guide dog community to perform her role.

Luckily, GDA | TLC was having their open house and invited Drew to attend. Gittlen spent the day with Drew, showing her the facility and teaching her about the making of a guide dog.

“So many times there are movies done about people who are blind or the guide-dog world that contain inaccuracies,” said Gittlen. “Sarah’s willingness to spend a whole day with us shows her dedication to portraying our community as accurately as possible for this film.”

“It means a lot that she spent the time with us to learn about our world,” said Gittlen.

The movie Guiding Emily is based on a book of the same title by Barbara Hinske.

Hallmark Movie & Mysteries will premiere Guiding Emily on Friday, Sept. 8 at 9 p.m. ET.

It’s Better in the IAM

It’s an exciting time to be a part of the IAM and the labor movement. Ahead of this Labor Day weekend, we confirmed what we already knew – people see unions as needed now more than ever.

According to polling released this week, more than seven-in-10 Americans approve of unions. Among those under the age of 30, nearly 90% support unions. Three-fourths support “workers going on strike to negotiate for better wages, benefits and working conditions.”

At the IAM, we saw this resurgence coming. We’ve been at the tip of the spear, taking back power for working families one day at a time.

We are making unprecedented investments in growing our union by hiring dozens of full-time organizers. From 2018 through 2022, we led the AFL-CIO in union election victories. And we are expanding into new industries, like healthcare, and growing our presence in our core sectors.

For our membership today, we continue to negotiate industry-leading contracts and taking on employers that mistreat our members. We are showing that the IAM is ready to for a new generation of prosperity by launching the Committee on the Future, growing leadership opportunities for women and more.

And we’re also finding our true purpose – to inspire and empower our members to make life better and create a world with security, dignity, and opportunity for all. Watch the IAM’s Purpose Anthem video here.

This Labor Day weekend, let’s be proud of our rich history. Let’s remember the 135 years of activism across North America that got us to this point, and that it was an IAM member who founded Labor Day.

Let’s talk to our friends and family about joining together in union, and the power we have to win justice and dignity on and off the job.

Illinois Local 478 Awards Banquet Honors Dedicated Members

On Saturday, Aug. 19, 2023, District Lodge 19 General Chairman Heath Jacobs and Josh Hartford, Special Assistant to the International President for the IAM Rail Division, attended Local 478’s 45th annual Service Awards Banquet in Arlington Heights, Ill.

This event was a great success for the Local, with over 75 members attending. The Local 478 executive board presented many service awards to their members recognizing their years of service within the IAM. As seen in the picture with Hartford, Local 478 President Mike Lemon, and Jacobs, there were two awards that were for 50 service years with the IAM—a huge accomplishment for Brothers Dan Slocumb and Dennis Jensen. Brother Dennis is a past District 19 Executive Board member.

District 19 and the IAM Rail Division would like to thank Local 478 for the invite and congratulate them for another successful event for their members.

The 41st IAM Grand Lodge Convention will be held in New York City in September 2024. An essential part of the Convention will be the 2024 IAM Commemorative Convention Book, and a popular feature of the book will be the ads from our own Local and District Lodges. Proceeds from the ads also help offset the cost of the Convention.

If not purchased already, we ask that each IAM Lodge consider buying an ad. You can submit your own ad design or select one of the personalized ready-made options from templates by submitting print-quality photos of your lodge members.

New Issue of IAM Educator Out Now!

The William W. Winpisinger Education and Technology Center is pleased to announce that a new issue of IAM Educator, an indispensable resource for union stewards, is now available. This issue investigates the rise of child labor in the workplace and how unions can use their strength to combat the trend and make workplaces safer for all workers. It also has articles on union membership gains and the NLRB ruling that employers must reimburse lost wages and other fees workers incur when illegally fired for organizing in the workplace.

Previously, IAM Educator was made available through Issuu, an online platform for publications, but the company discontinued the mobile version of the app earlier this year. The Winpisinger Center is investigating other methods of distribution but for now the new issue of IAM Educator is easily accessible at this link.

While new issues of IAM Educator are only available as an electronic publication, the Winpisinger Center has back issues of volumes 1-17 in paper. If you would like to have a selection of these back issues mailed to your Local Lodge, please complete and submit this form. We are making digital issues of volumes 1-17 as well, in English (Canadian and U.S.), French, and Spanish. 

We hope the membership finds IAM Educator useful and relevant to concerns in today’s ever-changing workplaces. Please direct any questions or feedback about the IAM Educator to the Winpisinger Center.

Architectural Workers United Files Unfair Labor Practice Charge Against Snøhetta for Unlawful Discrimination

The Architectural Workers United campaign, a division of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM), has filed an Unfair Labor Practice (ULP) charge with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) against North American architecture firm Snøhetta for violating their employees’ rights under the National Labor Relations Act.  

The ULP charge alleges Snøhetta unlawfully discriminated against several employees because of their support for union organizing.

“We trust that the National Labor Relations Board, upon hearing the evidence, will rule accordingly and in favor of the workers,” said IAM Eastern Territory General Vice President David Sullivan. “Today’s filing sends a message to the architecture industry that they are no different from any other industry and that if employers use illegal tactics to obstruct their employees from organizing, they will be held accountable.”
