The IAM International Headquarters hosted the Maryland/D.C. Chapter of the Alliance for Retired Americans. Leadership warned attendees about the current anti-labor political climate in Washington, D.C., and about potential cuts to earned benefits like Social Security and Medicare.

Florida IAM Members Fight for Workers’ Rights

Florida State Council of Machinists President Mike Phillips recently addressed members in Tallahassee regarding anti-union and anti-worker legislation being considered during the state’s legislative session. He highlighted specific threats to teachers’ unions, minimum wage, and child labor laws, emphasizing the need for strong opposition. IAM General Secretary-Treasurer Dora Cervantes, IAM Southern Territory General Vice President Craig Martin and IAM Chief of Staff Vinny Addeo also had keynote speeches affirming the power of unions and their positive impact on the middle class and economy.
The 50 members heard reports on organizing successes and the IAM Union securing firm contracts around the country. The Council listened to a detailed report from the IAM Political and Legislative Director Loren Almaroth on the IAM’s bipartisan work with legislators on various issues, including combating China’s trade practices. The council actively lobbied with the Florida AFL-CIO and collaborated with other unions to advocate for labor-friendly laws and the well-being of working families in Florida.

Spanish Leadership Program Continues to Build Power at Winpisinger Center

Recently, 24 IAM members from 15 Locals across the United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico, representing multiple industries, participated in the Spanish Leadership I Program at the William W. Winpisinger Education and Technology Center.
The Spanish-language programs at the Winpisinger Center are coordinated and developed by the Spanish Language Working Group (SLWG), which is comprised of IAM staff and members. The program covers a wide range of subjects designed to equip participants with the knowledge and skills necessary for effective union leadership. Some of the topics include labor history, parliamentary procedure in local administration, the role of the steward, human rights, the importance of organizing, and government and politics.
“One of the missions of the IAM is to empower our members through education,” said IAM General Secretary-Treasurer Dora Cervantes. “By offering a comprehensive curriculum in Spanish, we can ensure that more members have the opportunity to develop their leadership skills.”
In addition to Leadership I, the Winpisinger Center offers an extended Spanish language curriculum that includes Leadership II and Advanced Leadership programs, alongside various other educational offerings. These classes cater to different levels of union leadership and engagement, ensuring that members are well-prepared for the challenges they may face in their workplace and while servicing their fellow IAM siblings.

El Programa de Liderazgo en Español Continúa Fortaleciendo el Poder en el Centro Winpisinger
Recientemente, 24 miembros de la IAM de 15 Locales de los Estados Unidos, Canadá y Puerto Rico, los cuales representan múltiples industrias, participaron en el Programa de Liderazgo I en Español en el Centro de Educación y Tecnología William W. Winpisinger.
Los programas en español en el Centro Winpisinger son coordinados y desarrollados por el grupo de facilitadores de Liderazgo en Español (SLWG, por sus siglas en inglés), que está compuesto por personal y miembros de la IAM. El programa cubre muchos temas importantes diseñados para preparar a los participantes con el conocimiento y las habilidades necesarias para un liderazgo sindical eficaz. Algunos de los temas incluyen la historia laboral, procedimientos parlamentarios en la administración de las Locales, el papel del delegado, los derechos humanos, la importancia de organizar y el gobierno y la política.

IAM, Labor Coalition Champion ‘United We Move’ Plan to Save Illinois Public Transit

IAM and other transit unions are joining forces in Illinois to save public transit and demand immediate action from legislators.
The state’s $771 million transit funding gap is a significant issue, and the different agencies, like Metra, the Chicago Transit Authority or CTA, Pace, and the Regional Transportation Authority (RTA), play a crucial role in the city’s public transit infrastructure.
Some lawmakers want to merge the four agencies. But the Labor Alliance for Public Transportation, a coalition made up of more than 30 labor unions, has proposed the “United We Move Illinois” bill as a stronger, more strategic solution to tackle this challenge.

Illinois Uber, Lyft Drivers Join Together with Powerful IAM Local 701, SEIU Local 1 Coalition

After more than a decade of organizing rideshare drivers in Illinois and across the country, the IAM and SEIU are joining together in Illinois to win the pay, benefits and work rules that Uber and Lyft drivers deserve. The drivers, which number roughly 250,000, say they want union representation because they’re underpaid and overworked.
