Negotiation preparations for members of IAM Local 912 in Evendale, Ohio are well underway. The 11 members of the negotiating committee recently met in Hollywood, Md., to train at the IAM’s Winpisinger Education and Technology Center.

“Our team is ready,” said IAM Collective Bargaining Director Craig Norman, the lead negotiator for the talks. “Our membership has captured the spirit of coordinated bargaining. The UAW and IAM have been working closely together. We have a diverse committee representing the membership, with senior and new members ready to negotiate. This committee will represent solidarity with the membership now and in the future.”

Norman and the negotiating committee spent the week focusing on strategy, working on proposals, and conducting simulated bargaining talks with Winpisinger Center instructors. 

“Some of the committees have been through three or four negotiations, and some this being their first,” said IAM Local 912 President Mark Goodhart, a 16-year member.

When the team begins its talks with GE, they will be at the bargaining table alongside the UAW, whose members do assembly work at the facility. IAM members at GE Aerospace do maintenance and test cells.

Approximately 30 National Federation of Federal Employees (NFFE-IAM) members recently traveled to the IAM’s Winpisinger Center for a week-long steward class.

The program involved training in areas specific to the federal sector, such as collective bargaining, the Hatch Act and legislative action, prohibited personnel practices, unfair labor practices, grievance handling, arbitration, and an overview of the Federal Labor Relations Act. The members also discussed the issues facing all federal workers with the recent change of political power in Washington. This program was extremely helpful for the stewards, officers and business representatives serving federal members.

NFFE-IAM National President Randy Erwin visited with the members mid-week, briefing and preparing them for the coming attacks against Federal Workers. Erwin spoke about the recent gains in membership sign-ups and awarded many attendees with organizers’ pins. 

“The lifeblood of our union, which gives us power and a voice on Capitol Hill, comes from federal workers becoming dues-paying members,” said Erwin.

IAM International President Brian Bryant recently led an IAM delegation to the sixth annual Labor Innovation & Technology Summit in Las Vegas. The conference, co-founded by SAG-AFTRA and AFL-CIO, delivered critical strategies for addressing workers’ issues amongst the new policy landscape created by technological advancements. The IAM was one of several sponsoring unions for this very informative summit.

Bryant participated in a panel discussion on new technology.

“Technology is coming and we can’t stop it,” said Bryant “It’s upon us to get ahead of it and in front of it and do the best we can for our members.”

The discussions armed union leaders, workers and activists with cohesive plans to empower their membership in various areas, with an emphasis on collective bargaining, legislative advocacy, and member and community engagement. The agenda also addressed ways to protect the face of data, privacy, individuals, and surveillance innovations.

Participants were also equipped with a robust toolkit for strengthening the membership and our communities as unions confront growing technology challenges in the workplace.
